Peace Activist at Tatamagouche Centre February 9 2012

James Loney, Christian Peacemaker Team member held captive in Iraq for 118 days, is coming to Tatamagouche Centre in March to lead a workshop on Explorations in Non-Violence.

This is a great opportunity to delve into deep discussion on non-violent activism in a world that seems to be spiralling into a cycle of perpetual violence. And little wonder, as there seems to be so few role models for non-violent action. Or maybe we are just not hearing these stories, as mainstream media is increasing infatuated with only the violent aspects of protests against disparity and lack of social justice. The examples I often see of civil disobedience are violent, and I know from personal experience that so many actions of peaceful direct action and disobedience go under-reported or are simply ignored.

James Loney says “the crucible of captivity was a kind of school in which I was able to see the innermost workings of the universe, how we are all connected, how our liberation is inextricably tied together. I want to share this story in the hope of contributing to the emergence of a world without war, the single greatest challenge of the 21st century. Everything depends on this, for without peace nothing else is possible.”
