Este is the youngest of three children born to a crafty artisan turned primary school teacher, turned union leader. Este grew up playing in alleys and ravines in zone 19 of Guatemala City until being forced to move to Canada as a refugee in the early ’90s. Navigating life between political unrest, settler colonialism, and rampant capitalism across Turtle Island, Este became passionate about unpacking issues of power, privilege, and oppression and has dedicated personal and professional endeavours to developing tools for transformative learning and community engagement. Este is sometimes referred to as a monarch butterfly, having been on the back and forth along the return trail towards Mesoamerica for the last decade, finding along the way a wealth of experience working in international cooperation, grassroots solidarity, social and environmental justice.
