All are most welcome to join the Breaking the Silence Annual Gathering, Friday October 23rd, 7pm – Sunday, October 25th, 1pm. Guatemalan guest Emy Gomez, General Coordinator of the Xinca Parliament which is the ancestral authority of the Xinka people, will share their struggle for free, prior and informed consent regarding megaprojects in their territory, including mining.
We are thrilled that Andrea Currie will offer a performance piece inspired by her participation on the 2019 BTS Guatemala delegation. Andrea is a Sauteaux Métis woman from Manitoba, actively involved in Indigenous rights and social change here in Mi’kmaki. Her piece draws connections between Indigenous rights, as well as the protection of land and water from Mi’kmaki to Guatemala.
Charlotte Connolly will share her experience on a national mining justice delegation in February 2020, led by Lisa Rankin. We will be inspired by reports from Lead Cooperant este chep and our first BTS cooperants. And of course, there will be time for staff reports, community building and the Saturday night fiesta!
Your participation matters! So please come to make or renew connections, get updated on struggles in Guatemala and Mi’kmaki, and be inspired to ongoing support and action.
What should I bring?
- A talent, a song, a story for the Saturday night talent show as part of the fiesta!
- New or gently-used Guatemala-related items; handmade items, for the silent auction
- An open spirit ready to learn, share, and have fun!
Bursaries are provided by the Breaking the Silence Network. We sell crafts and BTS coffee during the year to ensure that all who support BTS are able to attend. Please do not stay away because of a lack of funds. We need you! Please indicate on the Registration Form how much bursary assistance you need. If you can, it is helpful to pay a portion of the cost.
If you prefer to send us a registration via snail mail or email please use this form – Oct 23-25, 2020 BTS registration form via mail
