The Maritimes-Guatemala Breaking the Silence Network (BTS) Annual On-site Gathering
October 24-25, 2020 Sat 9:30 AM – Sun 1:00 PM
We urge you to consider attending the Breaking the Silence Annual Gathering Saturday October 24th, 9.30am – Sunday, October 25th, 1pm. This is a critical moment for Breaking the Silence solidarity as our partners face serious challenges with COVID-19 and ongoing repression. And we feel it is most important for us to re-connect in person. We need your presence! (We are planning carefully to ensure a safe weekend. If, for COVID-19 reasons, we must hold a shorter meeting by Zoom, your registration payment will be refunded)
You will make and renew connections, be updated on struggles in Guatemala and Mi’kmaki, and be renewed for ongoing support and action. We’ll hear from Emy Gomez, General Coordinator of the Xinka Parliament virtually. Along with Emy, Lead Cooperant Este Chep will update us on the current Guatemala context. And our three Cooperants who had to return to Canada in mid-March, will share their meaningful experiences with the New Hope School, the Rabinal Community Legal Clinic and the Xinka Parliament.
Using a diversity and anti-oppression lens, we will reflect deeply reflect on the meaning and practice of solidarity in the light of both the Guatemalan and Maritimes contexts that we and our partners.have experienced in these past months.
We are thrilled that Andrea Currie will offer a performance piece inspired by her participation on the 2019 BTS Guatemala delegation. Andrea is a Sauteaux Métis woman from Manitoba, actively involved in Indigenous rights and social change here in Mi’kmaki. Her piece draws connections between Indigenous rights, as well as the protection of land and water from Mi’kmaki to Guatemala.
And of course, there will be time for staff reports, community building and a Saturday night bonfire. (Bring your warm sweaters and jackets!)
Please read our Covid-19 protocols for our onsite gatherings.
Your participation matters! So please come to make or renew connections, get updated on struggles in Guatemala and Mi’kmaki, and be inspired to ongoing support and action.
Bursaries are provided by the Breaking the Silence Network. We sell crafts and BTS coffee during the year to ensure that all who support BTS are able to attend.
