Community Update March 2026

Dear Tatamagouche Centre Friends & Community,

We are writing to all supporters of the Tatamagouche Centre to update you on the status of the Centre as of February 2026.

First of all, a big thank you to all of those who participated in the community consultations on December 22, January 6 and January 10.  Seventy-two people attended those events and many more have been in touch by telephone and email.  Your ongoing concern and insights into the possible future of the Centre are much appreciated.  If you were not able to attend an event you can access the presentation shared during the sessions here. We are also sharing with you a summary report on the discussions and ideas brought forward here.  As always if you have ideas to share please send them to board@tatacentre.com

No final decisions have been made concerning the future of the Centre at this time.  What did become clear in the consultations was the overwhelming support for the Rematriation process to turn over stewardship of the lands and properties of the Centre to Women of First Light (WoFL) in a good way.   People reiterated the commitment outlined in the MOU signed in May 2025 and expressed great hope and support for the healing space that WoFL intend to create on the lands.

The board of directors has articulated a number of scenarios for the short and medium term future of the Centre and has begun discussing these with WoFL and the United Church of Canada.  These discussions and our process of collective discernment will continue over the next couple of months.

We know that each of these scenarios need more background research to ensure we have enough information to make responsible decisions. We also know that upkeep of the lands and buildings needs to continue during this time of transition.  In that regard, we are forming working committees of the Tatamagouche Centre to help with background work, discernment and resource mobilization.  If you are interested in joining one of these committees (Property Management, Fundraising, Legacy, Legal and Research) please write to us at board@tatacentre.com.

We apologize for not being able to give more definitive information at this time.  We will be sure to update the community further in the Spring of 2026.    Donations are always welcome for our work towards Rematriation and can be made via this link – or via the Tatamagouche Centre website.

Thank you for your continued commitment to the Centre.

Peace,
